Ozone in Koi ponds
Crystal clear water that can be achieved using ozone.
The use of ozone in koi ponds is helpful in the fight against disease and parasites helping to maintain great water quality.
Ozone is regarded as the most effective solution when protecting koi from parasites and bacteria. Ozone will help to remove organics and help to reduce ammonia and nitrites. It will kill viruses, bacteria and pathogens and is fairly economical to use. Ozone also helps the mechanical and biological filtration processes by burning off proteins and turning ammonia and nitrites straight into nitrates and increases dissolved oxygen in the pond. Ozone removes toxic pollutants from the pond and is the only process available that can do this.
You will need to use an Ozone generator to achieve the appropriate levels of disinfection. In basic terms a ozone generator passes oxygen through an electrical gadget which passes a high voltage electrical discharge through the air flow, and this produces ozone. The ozone is then pumped into an appropriate vessel. As the ozone comes into contact with the water it burns off polluting organic material.
Not only does ozone disinfect the water but it also helps to kill algae cells. Water clarity improves a lot with the addition of an ozone generator. In normal water as the koi swim to the bottom of the pond they become blurred, but with the use of ozone the koi will appear crystal clear at six feet deep.
Ozone will not prevent you having to medicate your fish from time to time but will seriously reduce the risk of koi disease. Ozone also helps when introducing new koi into the pond. If a new addition the pond has a parasite then this parasite will quickly be killed preventing it from being passed onto the other fish. And so although you may still need to medicate an unhealthy fish, Ozone should prevent any cross contamination. And any treatment that is given to an un healthy fish will be enhanced using ozone because of the great water quality it provides.
Ozone is found in nature and helps to clean the air we breathe and unlike chlorine in water it gives off no harmful toxins.
Because ozone is a separate unit to your filter it will not kill the healthy bacteria inside the filter itself. Instead it will benefit your filter. This is often a worry when people start using ozone in their ponds however all research has proven that ozone will compliment your filters and keep water quality at its best.
