Marine Pure Block
Marine Pure Block is one of those revolutionary products that will help marine and reef keepers to keep their water parameters in top condition. Marine pure blocks are very porous and contain a staggering huge surface area for bacteria to grow and thrive. This will benefit the biological filtration and create a lesser need for aquariums to be designed around expensive live rock. An added advantage to this is that with less demand being placed on live rock, fewer areas of the coral reef will be destroyed when farming for live rock.
Marine Pure Rock has proved to be so effective at biological filtration that there is no longer a need to use live rock at all. This is about as big as it gets in the aquarium world, and on a par with the successful breeding of Yellow Tangs.
Many product reviews have shown that successful reef tanks and frag tanks are now being run using marine pure rockwith fantastic results. These are a must have for you Christmas list. The blocks come in a 8 x 4 x 4 inch block, but can also be purchased in thinner slabs and as balls that can be placed in a container on top of one another.
Their unique design allows for the removal of ammonia, nitrate and nitrite and are very effective when running a nano reef aquarium where water parameters can fluctuate quickly. This is known as the nitrogen cycle.

Marine Pure Rock has the added benefit of not adding unwanted pests into the aquarium like the Asterina Starfish pictured above. The 8 x 4 x 4 inch blocks contain a surface area of 139,800 cubic feet for healthy bacteria to thrive.
The study first started in 2011 with the aim to find a better media for biological filtration. Identical tanks were all set up using different filter media. Chemical ammonia was added to the aquariums in equal doses to see how quickly the ammonia would be converted into nitrite, then nitrate. Marine Pure Blocks came out as the winner, and will help larger fish loads to be placed on the aquarium. This is especially important to fish farms where space is a premium.

Adding Marine Pure Rock
Marine Pure Block should be soaked in RO water before being added to the aquarium. Ideally Marine Pure Rock should be added to the canister filter or sump. When you take it out of the packet you will notice that it is very crumbly because of its porous nature. So there will be a lot of powder in the plastic bag that needs to be thrown away. When you soak the block in RO water you will notice that the water turns quite cloudy.
Once you have rinsed the block, carefully place it in your sump trying to avoid making contact with the sides of the sump to prevent crumbling.
The reports on this product have been fantastic with marine keepers across the world reporting better and more stable water parameters.
Because the Marine Pure Blocks is so much smaller than live rock, your sump will have more room available to put other equipment in. The blocks can be taken out and cleaned when required, just make sure you avoid crumbling the block too much in the process.
There is some debate as to where to place the block in your sump. Some people prefer good water flow through it, whereas other will argue that this is not important at all, and that live rock has in fact a lot of anaerobic beneficial bacteria at play inside the aquarium. The truth from scientists is that there is still a lot to learn about how exactly filtration takes place in media like live rock, and whether aerobic versus anaerobic is better. It is very possible that both are just as important as one another.
