Dechlorinator water conditioner
If you do not have a RO water unit to purify your water at home then you will need to use a dechlorinator to make tap water safe. Tap water contains chlorine to make it suitable for human consumption. Chlorine is toxic to fish and some species of fish are very sensitive to chlorine. Exposure to chlorine will weaken the immune system of the fish and make it vulnerable to parasites and disease. The beneficial bacteria inside the aquarium that helps to create the nitrogen cycle is also killed or greatly damaged which will lead to all sorts of problems in the aquarium. A Dechlorinator will remove the harmful chlorine from tap water and many dechlorinator water conditioners will also neutralise other harmful chemicals in tap water.
Beneficial bacteria is very useful when setting up a new aquarium. It is generally sold in liquid form and can be added to the new tank water. This beneficial bacteria will speed up the maturing of the tank and start the nitrogen cycle. You will need to add your fish shortly after adding the beneficial bacteria to keep the bacteria alive as it will feed off fish waste.
Another method of introducing beneficial bacteria into your new aquarium is to take some tank water from a friends aquarium that has already matured. If their aquarium has been running for over 6 months then their tank water will really help to improve your water and speed up the cycling of the tank. The more water you can take the better.
